Maker Story - Coffee Bean Knitting, Kristin Follette

A Maker Story is a glimpse into the minds and lives of some of our favorite local artist and makers. We have been so fortunate to know an incredible group of talent from diverse backgrounds - each finding inspiration in different ways.

Each artist has their own unique voice and perspective, however it is safe to say they are all unified with a shared passion for creativity and for making things by hand.

We are proud to carry the work from this exceptional group of makers and wanted to provide a place to highlight their creations. We also hope this space becomes a destination to discover new ideas, interests and be inspired.

When did you start your business? I started Coffee Bean Knitting ten years ago when I realized I couldn't possibly wear or gift away all of the hats and scarves I was making. I knew I didn't want to slow down so I thought I'd take a chance and open an Etsy shop. As I grew I started doing local markets and haven't looked back since!

What inspired you to start Coffee Bean Knitting? I combined two of my favorite things, drinking coffee and knitting!

What does a typical day at Coffee Bean Knitting look like? I immediately brew some coffee then get to work knitting. My to-do list usually has a handful of hats mixed in with a scarf and a pair of mittens. I also hand dye yarn one or two days a week.

What product is the first style you ever made? Hats were the first thing I made and they're always my most popular product.

Are you currently working at your business full time? It is! It became my full time job three years ago.

What is your most popular style? And what’s your personal favorite? The Moxie Hat! It has a classic look and has been my most popular every year. It's also my person favorite, I think I have one in just about every color!

What is the best part of owning your own business? The best part is being able to do what I love every singe day. When I first started Coffee Bean Knitting, I thought it would be absolutely wonderful to be able to spend my days knitting. Even after ten years I still feel incredibly lucky.

What is the most challenging part of owning your own business? The most challenging part for me is all the computer work and bookkeeping that needs to be done.

Where do you picture your business in 5 years? I hope to continue expanding. I love designing knitting patterns so I'd like to add a few more over the years and add knit kits. Overall I don't see my core product lines changing too much but I would like to continue to grow each year.

If you didn't own Coffee Bean Knitting what would you do? I was a preschool teacher before starting Coffee Bean Knitting so I think I'd still be involved in early education!
