As my business has expanded, my pattern design work has mostly been “brought to life” through the process of screen printing. Screen printing permits me to print with greater speed, cover a much great surface area and allows for multiple copies of the same design with accuracy and consistency.

I have recently however returned to block printing as a means of testing out new concepts and ideas. Block printing requires focused attention - carving the initial block takes time which can be quite meditative. This slowing down actually forces you to more carefully examine the overall composition of the design in question. It is during this carving step that I am able to weed out the unnecessary elements of the layout which at first seemed so critical.

Some of my experiments which I highlighted on my Instagram stories were picked up and featured by Uppercase Magazine in their weekly newsletter.
