Maker Story - Pillows & Things, Dawne Dragonetti

A Maker Story is a glimpse into the minds and lives of some of our favorite local artist and makers. We have been so fortunate to know an incredible group of talent from diverse backgrounds - each finding inspiration in different ways.

Each artist has their own unique voice and perspective, however it is safe to say they are all unified with a shared passion for creativity and for making things by hand.

We are proud to carry the work from this exceptional group of makers and wanted to provide a place to highlight their creations. We also hope this space becomes a destination to discover new ideas, interests and be inspired.

When did you start your business? 2016

What inspired you to start Pillows & Things? I always wanted to own a small business and it was the right time so I went for it. I had just left teaching and helped out a friend with her home decor business and really enjoyed getting out my sewing machine again and creating.

What does a typical day at Pillows & Things look like? With my morning cup of tea I make my to do list. I can’t function without that list! I check my website to look at what orders I need to get out. I do some social media posts for any upcoming markets or pop ups and then head to the studio to get sewing.

What product is the first style you ever made? My first pillows reflected the current trends at that time and so I developed my farmhouse line.

Are you currently working at your business full time? Yes and then some!

What is your most popular style? And what’s your personal favorite? Seasonal pillows or tea towels are always popular. My customers always love the pops of color they can quickly add to their home decor and how easily they can change out between seasons. I have to say my personal favorite is my Home Town line. They make great gifts for someone leaving for college, buying a new house, or remembering a special place.

What is the best part of owning your own business? I love working with customers on custom orders. They have an idea in their mind and I really enjoy helping them work through it so that they end up with the perfect gift for that special someone.

What is the most challenging part of owning your own business? As someone who really enjoys getting out there meeting customers and other small business owners any time that I have to sit at my desk and do paperwork is pure torture.

Where do you picture your business in 5 years? Continuing to grow and maybe fulfilling my dream of opening a brick and mortar some day.

If you didn't own PIllows & Things what would you do? I would possibly still be in the field of education but I imagine I would have found someway to channel my creativity and desire to run my own business.
