Maker Story - Mayhewn Studio, Erin Kelley
A Maker Story is a glimpse into the minds and lives of some of our favorite local artist and makers. We have been so fortunate to know an incredible group of talent from diverse backgrounds - each finding inspiration in different ways.
Each artist has their own unique voice and perspective, however it is safe to say they are all unified with a shared passion for creativity and for making things by hand.
We are proud to carry the work from this exceptional group of makers and wanted to provide a place to highlight their creations. We also hope this space becomes a destination to discover new ideas, interests and be inspired.
When did you start your business? 2016
What inspired you to start Mayhewn Studio? I first began my business by making concrete home goods as a weekend job while I worked full time, really as a creative outlet. My love for concrete started while I was in college for civil engineering. I've now branched out to different materials and love the process of creating!
What does a typical day at Mayhewn Studio look like? There is no typical day really, but typically I start by reviewing any open orders and what events I have coming up, then making a list of what I need to get started on. I'll pack up orders that are ready to ship. Then I'll dive into casting items, or sand pieces that have cured for long enough. Usually there is a trip to the post office somewhere in there too!
What product is the first style you ever made? Candle holders, which I still love to do!
Are you currently working at your business full time? Mayhewn Studio is one of my business. My other small business is working as a certified Marie Kondo home organizer.
What is your most popular style? And what’s your personal favorite? It all depends on the season, but my candle holders are always popular, along with the small trays. Recently though, my bookends have been a hit, which is one of my favorite things to make as well.
What is the best part of owning your own business? I love the flexibility in working for myself from my home studio. I also love making beautiful and functional home goods, and seeing people enjoy them in their own homes.
What is the most challenging part of owning your own business? I would say the most challenging part of owning my own business is the constant marketing you have to do to promote your work. It can be really fun meeting new people but it can feel tough to always be promoting too, especially for us introverts!
Where do you picture your business in 5 years? I hope to see Mayhewn Studio partnered with more local businesses and hopefully making some larger format pieces like furniture.
If you didn't own Mayhewn Studio what would you do? I will always be a creator, whether I had a small business or not. I love it : )
