Maker Story - A'Laur Handcrafted Home Decor, Lauren Morin

A Maker Story is a glimpse into the minds and lives of some of our favorite local artist and makers. We have been so fortunate to know an incredible group of talent from diverse backgrounds - each finding inspiration in different ways.

Each artist has their own unique voice and perspective, however it is safe to say they are all unified with a shared passion for creativity and for making things by hand.

We are proud to carry the work from this exceptional group of makers and wanted to provide a place to highlight their creations. We also hope this space becomes a destination to discover new ideas, interests and be inspired.

When did you start your business? 2022

What inspired you to start A’Laur Home Decor? I started by making small concrete pots for my own home, but it quickly developed into more when friends and family also wanted some of my pieces. I started selling to people I knew and then graduated to makers markets!

What does a typical day at A’Laur Home Decor look like? In my spare time during the week I will make a few pieces here and there in order to restock at some of the shops I’m in, but mostly make pieces for markets. I hand mix and pour each piece allowing for uniqueness to shine through. Sanding and sealing are the next steps to finish off the piece.

What product is the first style you ever made? A small succulent planter was the 1st piece I ever poured.

Are you currently working at your business full time? My business is very part time. I also have a full time 9-5 job so I decided not to sell A’Laur pieces online. I am in a few shops and do markets here and there when I can. I truly enjoy the in person aspect of markets!

What is your most popular style? And what’s your personal favorite? My most popular and my most favorite happen to be the same piece and that is my Arch shape plant propagator/ bud vase.

What is the best part of owning your own business? Having the flexibility of doing it when I have time is one of the best aspects for me. I can choose when I want to do a market and make pieces.

What is the most challenging part of owning your own business? The most challenging part of owning a business is keeping track of everything so you’re not scrambling at tax time.

Where do you picture your business in 5 years? I will hopefully transition from only doing markets to also selling some pieces online.

If you didn't own A’Laur Home Decor what would you do? I have a 9-5 job, but if I didn’t spend weekends here and there doing markets I would be spending that time with my 3 dogs.
