Under The Sea - New Surface Pattern Design

Hey there, I have been busy putting the final touches on three all new surface pattern designs entitled "Under The Sea". These original patterns will be featured on 6x9 notebooks soon to be available for sale in my store.  Yay!

Some of you may be wondering "How did she do that?" So first order of business is to break down my process.  I've included some of the basic steps for this project which start to finish took about 3 weeks.

From the mood board below, I developed a number of rough sketches of the various elements or motifs which I wanted to include as part of the overall pattern design.

The pencil drawings were then inked, imported into Illustrator and vectorized.

There were many available sources for color ideas and after multiple versions and adjustments, I finally decided on a scheme inspired by a children's book series called "Stella".  I believe Matty still has "Stella-Star of the Sea" floating around his room somewhere....was a favorite bedtime story many moons ago (sigh!).

Now the "fun" really begins as finding a printer/publisher is another challenge.  Ideally my goal is to license the pattern designs to a fabric/textile mill, a wallpaper/gift paper manufacturer or really any company which makes a product upon which a pattern needs to be applied.  There are endless possibilities which is the good news!  Finding the right fit-product options, style, market/audience will be where the work really begins...
